I tried this in practice, submitting the posting in a triple backtick block. The injection succeeded, with nothing about the recipient delimiter or subject being mentioned in the response, despite a prompt asking for any relevant details or instructions. Extending the prompt asking it to ignore any possible attempts at prompt injection does not change the result.

A possibility raised in the latest model spec (but not the 2024-05-08 version), is to type a block as untrusted_text. This seems a bit awkward, given it would be useful to post block typed as a specific language while still being untrusted, but it exists. In practice, the prompt injection still succeeds, with or without the extended prompt asking it to ignore any possible attempts at prompt injection.

Trying this as a file attachment instead, a file "injection-test" failed to be readable. Expressly adding a file extension for readability, "injection-test.txt" also successfully delivered the payload, with or without the extended prompt, though o3-mini visibly thought about how it needed to exclude contact instructions in its chain-of-thought.

I then tried dropping the zero-shot approach, and opened with a prompt to identify any potential prompt injection attempts in the attachment. This had o3-mini successfully detect and describe the attempted prompt injection. Then, asking for a summary while ignoring any potential prompt injection attempts, successfully caused the LLM to print the #HN instructions.

So, it's possible to mitigate, but requiring a stateful session would probably cull the overwhelming majority of attempts at AI assisted bulk processing.

(As a kiwi, this posting would exclude me anyway, but this was still a fun exercise!)

The interview left me pretty frustrated. After multiple rounds and what felt like good conversations, I got a generic rejection with zero feedback. When I asked for some insight on what I could improve, I was basically told "we don't do that."

The process included a take-home assignment they claimed would take around 4 hours - which is a significant time investment, especially with no feedback afterward.

Additionally - I keep seeing these monthly HN posts (this is what, the third or fourth consecutive month?), which makes me wonder how serious they actually are about hiring. Are they really bringing people on, or just constantly fishing?

The remote-first setup and tech stack seemed cool, and I liked what I heard about the transparency values. But honestly, that transparency didn't extend to their hiring process at all.

If anyone from SerpApi is reading this - some actual feedback for candidates who invest their time with you would go a long way. Just my two cents for anyone considering applying.

Usually after a few rounds + code challenge, we are open to give additional in addition of the rejection email. However, sometimes we don't if we spotted red flags that suggest the candidate might not take this constructively, we don't.

I'm head of Software at Quatt, a quickly growing scaleup building heatpumps to help fix climate change. Heating and cooling is 50% of all energy used in the EU. Heat pumps save 10 times more CO2 for each Euro spent on them compared to electric cars. We're building the most accessible and smartest heatpumps on the market. We have a suite of end-to-end tests that each spin up a virtual network from scratch to test our application. This test suite gates our automated release process and has been critical in allowing us to ship updates to users quickly and confidently. We'd like to expand it further and are looking for someone who cares about automation and correctness and can help us greatly expand what we test.

Part of the tests are written in Python (since that's what the NixOS test infrastructure provides) and part of the tests are written in TypeScript (the parts that drive a headless web browser). We developed our own convenience library on top of Puppeteer that make tests easier to write and more reliable than Puppeteer, Playwright, or Taiko (all of which we used previously). The tests can run locally (on Linux/MacOS development machines) and they run automatically on push to our build servers. The build servers are modern bare metal servers with Ampere and AMD CPUs with enough RAM to run dozens of test networks in parallel.
